The Department of Defense and the USAF senior leadership identified lack of effective language and cultural training as a major operational deficiency in today’s environment where more than 200,000 Airmen are carrying out missions overseas in a range of geographies. TIS developed a high fidelity, serious game on Cross Cultural Negotiations for Air War College, Maxwell, AFB, Alabama, USAF. The target audience for this simulation comprised of Lt. Colonels and Colonels of the USAF, and international students of AWC taking senior leadership courses
TIS recommended a serious game solution based on a 3D game engine that:
Provides an interactive and immersive learning experience through the extensive use of multimedia assets
Enables participants to apply decision making skills and judgment in a consequence free environment
Allows learners to understand the impact of these decisions by being able to actually watch them unfold
Provides multiple cultural scenarios based around a decision tree branching framework
Is structured around a instructional form that is exploratory and non-linear
Provides substantive and contextual debrief of a participants performance
These 3-D and video intensive modules entail creation of virtual worlds and intelligent tutor agents. The modules besides having a high degree of visual realism entail rich-media elements, comprising audio, animation, and high levels of interactivity. The solutions usually feature a base storyline and several integral scenarios. Intuitive user controls allow learners to traverse the module in an exploratory and non-linear manner. The learners make decisions and understand the impact of the decisions by actually watching them unfold. The backend of the module usually provides for complex decision tree branching framework.
In addition to ‘learning by doing’ substantive and contextual feedback on learner’s decisions is provided to aid decision-making and augment learning.
